At 166 square miles, Barbados is a small island. You could probably walk around it in a day or so, less if you were being chased by a hungry bear (fear not, we have none here).
There is no shortage of alternatives when it comes to getting around while in Barbados. Here are a few of them:
You could walk. Rent a bicycle. Rent a scooter. Catch a cab/taxi. Commit a crime, get arrested, get hauled to prison (Note: the last alternative is not recommended)
You could also catch a bus. There are two types of bus plying the highways and byways of Barbados.
There's the Government owned and operated bus system: the Barbados Transport Board. Look for the blue and yellow buses (see pic above). The fare is $2.00 BDS from/to anywhere on a single bus.
Then you have the yellow and blue buses. These are niether owned, nor operated by the Government. Depending on who you ask, you'll get a variety of feedback on them.
Some folks may say that they are a law unto themselves, others will say they are just hustling, trying to make ends meet. Some will swear by them, others at 'em!
Some of these buses stop, or pull out suddenly in front of you, others lazily slide down the West Coast of the island at random times during the day, or fly down the road like a bat out hell.
In any case, you'll know their kind when you see it. Mind you, they are not all like that. I hope. But you know how it is, a few rotten apples spoil the whole lot. So it's best to experience it for yourself. Or maybe it isn't.
Then we have the ZR vans. But that's another story. One that's best left for another time and day. Suffice to say, you've got a few transport options above to choose from. |
