The Media in Barbados can be sorted, loosely, into two categories: Old Media and New Media.
Old Media, (i.e., pre-Internet), are the newspapers, radio and television entities of Barbados. They've been around since the dawn of Barbadian man (and woman).
Their products are consumed by Barbadians from all walks of life. Even with their relatively recent forays into the Internet age, their busness models still largely reflect their Old Media roots.
Old Media: The Nation Newspaper (print newspaper) The Barbados Advocate (print newspaper) Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (radio and t.v.)
New media (i.e., post-Internet): Barbados Today (online newspaper) The Bajan Reporter (online 'zine)
But Wait! There's More! (sounding all t.v. salesman-like) Barbados Free Press and Barbados Undergound. Two controversial and opinionated Barbadian blogs Both written anonymously.
As such, they can, and do, tackle issues that would normally make the legal departments in O.M. and N.M. worry. However, because they are anonymous, it also raises questions about their motivations, accountability and transparency.
In any case, both blogs make for interesting reading and reveal a different side of Barbados (sometimes good, sometimes bad). |
