Barbados...
- Is not and should never be confused with Jamaica, an entirely different country that is also located in the Caribbean.
- Is located at about 13 degrees North, 59 degrees West. The island covers and area of land that is some 430 sq. km. in size, or about 2.5 times the size of Washington, DC.
- Has a tropical climate with a rainy season between June and November and a dry season between December and May. On some days, the can get up to 32 degrees, during the night, it can call to 24 degrees (based on information from my car's temperature gizmo and not weather data from the Barbados Met Office).
- Is divided into 11 parishes: St. Lucy (the northern most parish), St. Peter, St. James, St. Michael, Christ Church (southern most parish), St. Thomas, St. George, St. Andrew, St. Joseph, St. Joseph and St. Philip.
- Bridgetown is the capital of the country and is located in the parish of St. Michael.
- Citizens of Barbados are officially called Barbadians, however, they are also known as Bajans (which sounds less formal and way cooler!)
- Although English is the official language of Barbados, people also speak Bajan, a local dialect.
- The population was estimated to be at 275,338 persons in December 2008.
-
Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA, IATA code is BGI, ICAO code is: TPBP) is the island's lone airport.
- Is essentially a two-party system. These are the Barbados Labour Party, originally called the Barbados Progressive League and founded in 1938 and the Democratic Labour Party, founded in 1995.
